Archos 605 WiFi Portable Media Player Review

Upon reading many reviews on the different Media Players, it is plain to me that Archos 605 WiFi is the most impressive portable media player, even surpassing the iPod Touch. Archos has removed some features from the 605 media player, but the features that remain cause it to rise above the rest and remain ever so impressive.

You will find that the Archos 605 WiFi comes in four different memory configurations; a 4 GB flash memory model with an SD memory-card slot; and 605 WiFi 30 GB, 80 GB, and 160 GB hard drives, but with no expandable memory. The Archos 605 comes equipped with a 4.3-inch widescreen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution giving you an incredible digital picture quality. The Archos 605 also comes equipped to play the most popular audio and video formats and optional plugins are available for virtually all other formats. The 605 WiFi also converts into an incredible digital video recorder with the assistance of the optional DVR Station.

You will find that one of the biggest complaints that critics have about the Archos 605 WiFi is that many of its best features cost extra, i.e. web browser. It is thought that Archos cut features that were not being used by the majority of Archos users in an attempt to keep the cost down and stay competitive. Was this a smart move by Archos? Some will say no, and that Archos was being cheap; but others like me will say, “Why clutter this incredibly capable device with unused programs.” It can be looked at in the same way as you do when you purchase a new computer. There are always tons of programs that you probably don’t even open let alone use, right? The same could hold true with this outstanding device, hence the decision by Archos not to include all programs that the device could support. Now, this is just my opinion, but it is a possibility.

Even though critics don’t like the “cutting” of certain features, the Archos 605 WiFi still remains to be one of their all-time favorites, even rating it higher than the Apple iPod Touch. This is most certainly due to the fact that the Archos 605 comes out of the box with near universal media compatibility. It supports the most common media such as WMV, MPEG-4, ASP, MP3, WMA, protected WMA and WAV formats, and can have additional formats added such as MPEG-2, H.264, AAC and AC3.

With the use of the optional DVR Station, the 605 WiFi also becomes a fully functional DVR with the ability to download movies and TV programs complete with downloadable program guide. It can even change channels on a cable box with its built-in IR transmitter. Archos and Dish Network will allow Dish Network users with DVRs to transfer the content to an Archos 605 WiFi or 705 WiFi with a downloadable plug in.

One other feature that really stands out with the 605 WiFi is the touchscreen interface. Archos has gone out of their way to make the Archos 605 WiFi extremely easy to use and operate with outstanding programs and formats including the integrated kickstand and internal speaker for added convenience.
